I’ve had so many people messaging me saying how this week feels overwhelming impossible. It’s hard to wake up in the morning dreading looking at the news & it’s even harder to try to tune it all out when it’s the thing you care about.
The internet is swirling with people saying “This isn’t America” but the thing is, this IS America—it’s what America has always been. This country was founded on genocide and built on the backs of slaves. We put Americans in internment camps during WWII. Even today our institutions are set up to give power and privilege to white, straight, cis-gendered people.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.—Reverend Martin Niemoller
Staying silent and doing nothing doesn’t put you on the right side of history, it puts you on the complicit side of history.
I’m not sure of a lot of things right now, but I do know we better get this healthcare situation figured out because we are all going to need treatment for our political PTSD in the future.
Recipes I tried
I made enchiladas and then used the extra filling for tacos because I contain multitudes. The enchiladas were lazy and delicious—shredded rotisserie chicken and sauteed veggies consisting of mushrooms, bell peppers, spinach, jalapenos, chipotle peppers, and onion. For enchilada sauce, I just used Trader Joe’s brand, but I’m itching to make some green chili enchiladas.

Tonight, I’m treating myself to a wine and cheese tasting at the new Little Italy location of Carruth Cellars. Saturday, I’m thinking of driving to Julian for a solo hike and pie date before I join some friends for a bonfire on the bay. On Sunday I have plans to catch up with a friend who just got back from a cruise in Nova Scotia. In between all of this, I have about 5 deadlines to make for Monday, a book to finish, and a few pitches to send out to publications. Zeus, grant me strength.
